Comments: A New Beginning, A New Threat...
Summary: As the broadcast series based on Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in the Shell nears the conclusion of its first season, the filmmakers begin drawing together the tangled strands of the plot. Major Kusanagi, Batou, Chief Aramaki, and the staff of Public Security Section 9 begin to discover the links between the Laughing Man and the scandal surrounding cures for "cyberbrain sclerosis." They also learn the trail of murders and corruption reaches higher than they imagined: leading members of the ruling party of the Japan are implicated. The Laughing Man finally appears and reveals that he's a more adept hacker than anyone expected, and that his choice of a pseudonym from J.D. Salinger was anything but casual. After some wrong turns and blind alleys the filmmakers finally hit their stride and recapture some of the menace and excitement of the original feature. (Rated 13 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
